They remained in the home until 1862, when John died and Mary moved to a nearby townhome.   A Confederate sympathizer during the Civil War, Mary Surratt eventually met John Wilkes Booth and aided him in the conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln. She was later captured, tried, and hanged for her crimes. Today, you can learn about her life, the reasons for her involvement in the assassination and more in the building she called home. Featuring exhibits, some of her original possessions, and guided tours, the Surratt House Museum is a must-visit for Civil War history buffs and conspiracy theorists alike. more Dr. Mudd House Museum Situated in the heart of Waldorf, the Dr. Mudd House Museum, also known as St. Catherine, is one of the most-visited museums in the city and the original domicile of Dr. Samuel Mudd, who was also part of the conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln. Mudd built the home in 1856 after receiving about 200 acres as a wedding present and proceeded to build the home, which features mid-1800s farmhouse architecture.   Like Surratt, Mudd was a Confederate supporter, but unlike her, he was only imprisoned for his role in the assassination. However, the most intriguing fact isn’t that Mudd lived here. It’s that Mudd splinted the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth in the home shortly after the assassination and let him rest for a few hours. Today, the home is the site of the Dr. Mudd House Museum, which provides guided tours Wednesday through Sunday that tell you all about the doctor’s life and that one fateful night in April 1865. Piscataway Indian Museum Long before the Civil War, the area near Waldorf was the home of the Piscataway Indians and other tribes. If you’re interested in Native American culture and history, that makes the Piscataway Indian Museum the perfect fit for you. While most exhibits put an emphasis on this tribe, the museum also has exhibits on Indians from around the country. Cedarville State Forest is a unique historical forest in the state of Maryland. The location of this state-protected park was originally used by the Piscataway, a Native American tribe from the Chesapeake Bay area, because of the land's comfortable climate and abundant wildlife. The entire forest spans over 20 miles, eventually running into the Wicomico River. Today, the forest is primarily used as a camping site offering a variety of fun and exciting outdoor activities. While there are a lot of activities you can do at Cedarville State Forest, there are at least four activities you want to try out first. If you want to experience the best of the outdoors in Maryland, make sure the four activities mentioned here get on your vacation's to-do list. more Fishing Fishing in Cedarville State Forest has been described as one of the best fishing experiences in the entire state of Maryland. Fishing is restricted to land only. Camping There are many designated camping areas throughout Cedarville State Forest. You can also choose a lakefront campground for daily swimming in the cool waters. Hiking and Biking With a 19.5 mile long trail to explore, you will never run out of hiking or biking opportunities. Because the Maryland Department of Natural Resources owns the entire 2,631 acres of land, you will find many undeveloped areas to explore, should you decide to veer off of the trail. Staying on the trail, however, will still give you plenty to look at with frequent wildlife sightings. The mile-wide Cedarville swamp attracts many forms of wildlife, so you never know what you might spot along your hike. Horseback Riding With over 19 miles of trails to see, you might find it difficult to cover the land by foot. You can bring your horse or rent one for the day and travel one of the equestrian-friendly trails. Here, you will find beautiful views with a ton of history. One of those sights are the loblolly pine plantations, pine trees that were planted in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Other sights include the historical moonshine trails and designated hunting areas. You might even see some of the attempted drainage ditches that were created during the colonial times in an attempt to drain the swamps for living purposes. The Brandywine Trails in the park have been voted some of the best trails in the country, partly because of the fantastic scenery. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Cedarville State Forest Park offers everything that you could ever ask for. The park is ideal for fishermen, campers, hikers, and horseback riders.
